Premier Bank is partnering with a national program to offer area students financial literacy education.

The bank chain, formerly First Federal Bank of the Midwest, announced in a news release this week it is working with Banzai, a financial literacy program, to bring free finance education to students.

The online program is the largest of its kind, servicing more than 60,000 teachers nationwide, according to a news release.

Premier Bank will work with schools to teach the personal finance program. Students will work through real-life scenarios as they learn to pay bills and balance a budget. They'll also get a taste of unexpected expenses like parking tickets, interest charges and overdraft fees. Students will be exposed to other financial concepts like auto loans, bank statements, entertainment costs and savings.

"Kids get their own accounts, and they work through assignments that are based on real life," Morgan Vandagriff, co-founder of Banzai, said in a statement. "But because Premier Bank is sponsoring it, local schools get it for free. More than ever, it's important that kids develop sound financial skills to prepare them for the real world, and Premier Bank realizes that and they're doing something about it."

The curriculum is available to 20 schools in Defiance, Ohio, where Premier is headquartered, and surrounding counties.

Lenawee County schools include: Adrian, Hudson, Madison, Morenci and Tecumseh high schools.
