More than 600 students in eight local schools will be getting a free education on how to manage their money due to American Eagle Financial Credit Union’s sponsorship of the program.

In addition to Southington High School, schools signed up include The Metropolitan Learning Center in Bloomfield, The Learning Center in Cromwell, Pathways to Technology Magnet School, East Hartford High School, Glastonbury High School, Illing Middle School in Manchester, and Mercy High School in Middletown.

Banzai is a web-based financial literacy program. Students set up their own account and work through assignments. The interactive online program is supplemented with printed workbooks, which aligns with state curriculum requirements for personal finance education. It has become the largest program of its kind, servicing more than 19,000 teachers and available in all 50 states.

“Youth education with an emphasis on personal finance is an important area that the credit union is committted to improving throughout towns we serve,” said Brian Kennedy, senior vice president and chief strategy officer of American Eagle Financial Credit Union. “Our partnership with Banzai will allow us to continue that commitment in the digital age.”

American Eagle Financial Credit Union has offered time, money, industry experience and a variety of credit union resources to help local schools teach personal finance in the classroom. Students using the program are exposed to real-life scenarios where they learn to pay bills and balance a budget. Students must learn to manage unexpected expenses such as parking tickets, interest charges and overdraft fees. The educational program also introduces students to auto loans, bank statements, entertainment costs, saving and more.
