Representatives from USFCU began the first program today at Central High in Blountville, Tennessee.

Hannah King, 16, has a job and has $25 taken out of her check and put in her savings account each time her check is deposited into her checking account.

“I’ve learned that you need to start saving now because when a crisis happens you’re going to need money to fix that and you might not have enough money to fix that problem,” she said. “I’ve learned that saving money now is going to help me in the future.”

Sherrie Spiegler, personal finance and accounting teacher, signed up for the program.

“We’re always looking for more ways to show our students personal finance literature and to advance them in their knowledge,” she said. “They are trying to prepare themselves to have part time jobs, eventually full time jobs, and we want them to be able to keep track of their money. We’ve talked about savings and how to invest for their futures so they won’t have overdraft fees. This program goes through a whole month of paying bills and they take their money from each category – for food, for other expenses, for their car payment, for their monthly rent – and they have to keep track of that as they go through the month and pay their bills. This will help them to be able to do that when they graduate.”
